Overview

Aftersell’s Post-purchase offers help increase your average order value (AOV) by presenting relevant upsell offers after the initial purchase. These offers are shown either immediately after checkout or on the Thank You page, allowing customers to buy more.

What is a post-purchase offer?

A post-purchase offer is an additional product offer shown after a customer completes their initial checkout. Offers can appear in two places:
  • Right after checkout, before the order confirmation. (Post-purchase upsells)
  • After the order is confirmed, as part of the order status page. (Thank you page upsells)
In both cases, offers are designed to be quick and easy to accept and this helps you generate more revenue without interrupting the customer’s checkout experience.

How the post-purchase page works

The post-purchase page is a Shopify-hosted page shown between checkout and the order confirmation. This is where Aftersell can display Post-purchase upsells, based on what the customer just purchased.

Funnel flow:

  1. Customer completes checkout.
  2. Aftersell shows the first upsell offer.
  3. Customer accepts or declines.
    • If accepted, the product is added to the original order. and you can set more “if accepted” follow ups.
    • If declined, a downsell offer can be shown.
  4. Customer is taken to the Thank you page.

How the thank you page works

The Thank You page is the final page of the checkout experience where customers view their order summary and tracking info. With Aftersell, you can turn this page into another opportunity to increase sales by adding:
  • Product recommendations
  • FAQs
  • Text
  • Image
  • Custom Code
Thank You Page upsells can be configured in one of two ways:
  • Modify original order - the upsell is combined with the initial purchase into a single order.
  • Create new draft order - the upsell generates a second order that is distinct from the original. When configured as a new draft order, if the customer abandons the second checkout, the upsell order remains in Draft status.
For how to configure these widgets and the full list of Thank You Page settings, see the Thank You Page extensions overview. If your store is still on the legacy Thank You page scripts editor, the order-handling options differ (merging must be enabled and is off by default) — see the Thank You page scripts overview.

Key benefits

  • Boost average order value. Post-purchase and Thank You Page offers help customers add more to their purchase.
  • Acceptance on the post-purchase page. No extra steps or friction.
  • Completely native to Shopify. Offers match your brand and are hosted by Shopify.
  • Highly targeted. Use conditions to control when and what offers show.
  • Visual aid features. Implement the ‘Show progress bar on funnel’ to guide customers through multi-step funnels.

How to create a post-purchase funnel

When you open Post-purchase Funnels for the first time (or when you have no funnels), you’ll see a template gallery to help you get started quickly.

Starting from a template

The template gallery shows ready-made funnel options to help you get started quickly:
  • Classic upsell — A 4-step funnel: Upsell 1 (most expensive product), Upsell 2 (4 AI-recommended products), Downsell 1 (most expensive product), and Downsell 2 (AI-recommended product).
  • Bestseller bundle — A 4-step funnel: Upsell 1 (4 AI-recommended products), Upsell 2 (most expensive product), Downsell 1 (most expensive product), and Downsell 2 (most expensive product).
  • Subscription Upgrades — Builds a funnel that offers existing subscribers a post-purchase change to their active subscription. This template appears only when the Subscription Upgrades Beta feature is enabled on your account, and it opens its own setup wizard rather than the confirmation modal below. See Subscription Upgrades.

Confirmation modal for Classic upsell and Bestseller bundle

When you click Use this template on the Classic upsell or Bestseller bundle, a confirmation modal opens before the funnel is created. The modal lets you:
  • Preview the offer flow — See each step in the funnel with the product type and discount that will be applied.
  • Set a max discount — Enter a whole number from 0 to 100. How the amount is distributed depends on the template: for the Classic upsell, Upsell 1 receives half this amount (rounded up) and the remaining steps receive the full amount; for the Bestseller bundle, both Upsell 1 and Upsell 2 receive half this amount (rounded up) and the remaining steps receive the full amount. The default is 30%.
  • Choose the funnel’s starting status — Toggle the funnel active or inactive before saving. An active funnel starts showing to customers immediately after creation.
Click Save to create the funnel, or Cancel to exit without creating anything. After the funnel is created, you land directly in the funnel editor to customize triggers, offers, and design.

Bulk actions on funnels

You can perform bulk actions on multiple funnels at once from the Post-purchase Funnels list using the More actions button (the kebab menu icon) in the filter bar.

Enabling or disabling multiple funnels at once

  1. Select the checkboxes next to the funnels you want to update. Use the header checkbox to select all funnels on the current page.
  2. Click the More actions button (the kebab menu icon) in the filter bar.
  3. Select Enable funnel / Enable N funnels or Disable funnel / Disable N funnels. The option is greyed out if all selected funnels are already in that state, or if nothing is selected.
Only funnels that need to change are updated — funnels already in the target state are skipped. Your selection is preserved after the operation, so you can chain enable and disable actions without re-selecting.

Deleting multiple funnels at once

  1. Select the checkboxes next to the funnels you want to delete. Use the header checkbox to select all funnels on the current page.
  2. Click the More actions button (the kebab menu icon) in the filter bar.
  3. Select Delete funnel (singular) or Delete N funnels (plural, showing the count of selected funnels). The option is disabled until at least one funnel is selected.
  4. Confirm the deletion in the modal that appears.
Deleting a funnel removes it and all its associated widgets, split tests, and Thank You Page widgets. This action cannot be undone. Historical analytics data for deleted funnels is preserved — see Analytics in Aftersell for details.

Adding more funnels

Once you have at least one funnel, use the Add funnel button to create additional funnels. The button opens a dropdown where you can:
  • Pick a template to start from (same options as the gallery). Selecting Classic upsell or Bestseller bundle opens the confirmation modal described above.
  • Select Create manually to build a funnel from scratch with no presets.

Manual setup steps

  1. Go to Post-purchase Funnels in the Aftersell admin.
  2. Click Add funnel and choose Create manually, or select a template.
  3. Set trigger conditions to control when the funnel shows.
  4. Add upsell offers.
  5. Customize the offer design and messaging.
  6. Enable the funnel and publish it.
You can create multiple funnels and prioritize them to control which one runs when multiple conditions match. You can also track the triggers for post-purchase upsells using Aftersell’s Order Browser, which displays a “shown” status to confirm successful activation of the funnel.
