# Enabling Upcart in a draft theme only

> This article explains how to enable and test Upcart in a draft theme without making it live on your storefront.

# Overview

While Upcart includes a built-in preview feature that lets you view the cart on your live theme without publishing it (found in the top-left corner next to **Cart Status**), there are cases where you may need to test it directly within the **theme editor**.

***

**Steps to Follow**

1. In the **Upcart Cart Editor**, ensure your cart is **published**.
2. In your **Shopify Admin**, go to **Online Store → Themes**.
3. On your **Live Theme**, click **Customize → App embeds** and confirm the **Upcart** embed is disabled. Save if you made any changes.
4. On your **Draft Theme**, click **Customize → App embeds**, enable the **Upcart** embed, and click **Save**.
5. Click the three-dot menu in the top-left corner of the theme editor and select **Preview**.

✅ **Success!** Upcart is now active only on your Draft Theme. Any changes saved in the Upcart Cart Editor will be visible there without affecting your Live Theme.

Here’s a quick tutorial walking you through these steps:

## Important Notes

1. As outlined in the **Quickstart Guide to Upcart**, showing the cart to shoppers takes two parts:

* Publishing a cart in the **Upcart interface**.
* Enabling the **Upcart** app embed on the theme you want it to appear on.

The two are independent. Publishing a cart doesn’t require the app embed to be on anywhere — a cart can be Live while every theme has the embed off, which the app shows as an **App embed off** badge. So you do **not** need to temporarily enable the embed on your live theme first; enabling it on the draft theme alone is enough.

2. If you have Discounts configured in your cart, those rules will remain active via Shopify's discount system **even when the app embed is disabled**.

Disabling the app embed only hides the Upcart cart drawer from your storefront. It does not disable your active Discount rules. Customers will still see Discount adjustments applied at checkout.
